Day 226: FREE Comic Book Day, Puyallup, WA

This Saturday (May 5th) is Free Comic Book Day!

This is the only day when comic book stores and libraries around the world give away comics to people of all ages.

At the Puyallup Public Library they will be giving out comic books at the front of the library from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

This is a great opportunity to bring your kids downtown and have them pick out some old classics or some fun new comics.

Or, just treat yourself to an issue of Spider-man, Star Wars, Owly, or Sonic the Hedgehog, just to name a few.

Day 225: 30th Annual Puyallup Farmers Market, Puyallup, WA

The 30th anniversary season of the Puyallup Farmer’s Market began early again this year to allow everyone in the area a chance to purchase flowers, hanging baskets and much more from “local grown in Washington vendors.

The Market will also move into the Pavilion beginning May 5 and will run through the end of Fall, October 13th on Saturdays only.

Day 224: The Spring Fair 2012, Puyallup, WA


It’s that time of year again…The Puyallup Spring Fair is happening April 19 – 22 (4 days only!).

There is TONS of FREE things to do at the fair. Take your pick and have a great time…

Free Entertainment

Dock Dogs: This new sport challenges dogs to dash down a specially built 40-foot canine runway and jump headlong into a large portable swimming pool filled with 27,000 gallons of water. The longest distance jump wins! Enjoy the spectacular abilities of these amazing dogs.

Swifty Swine Racing Pigs: Stop by and watch piglets race around a track for the coveted prize of a peanut butter cup at the finish line.

Timberworks Lumberjack Show: Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. No, it’s not Superman – these “men of steel” are lumberjacks in the Timberworks Lumberjack Show. The NEW show includes century-old skills like axe throwing, chopping, log rolling, cross cut sawing, hot sawing and chainsaw carving. To pass idle time in logging camps, lumberjacks would challenge each other in a head-to-head competition.

Danny Vernon Illusion of Elvis: With the voice, look, and passion of the twentieth century icon, Danny Vernon recaptures Elvis Presley’s appeal! This show is sure to be fun entertainment for the whole family!

Gothard Sisters: A show with this talented trio of sisters includes fast fiddle numbers, singing ballads, and champion Irish step dancing incorporated into exciting numbers featuring country, Irish, flamenco, and rock influences, as well as stories, educational tidbits, and a good time for audiences of all ages.

KKWF Presents JT HodgesDetailsCountry fans want to hunt down JT Hodges, Texas newcomer, after getting a listen to his infectious summer single, “Hunt You Down.” Plus, there’s plenty more to be pursued in Hodges alternately tender and raucous Show Dog – Universal Music debut. Fans are quickly finding out that behind those baby blue eyes lies the seasoned soul of a country-rock classicist. Check out his show at the Coca-Cola Stage.

Northwest Jr Rodeo: From the littlest to the champion bull rider, these young contestants bring big hearts and the cowboy spirit. The NWJR kick-off event for 2012 will feature bareback riding,, bull riding, team roping, breakaway roping, barrel racing, goat tying, pole bending, dummy roping and more! Let’s Pretend Wild West Show: Little ones will love being part of a Wild West show. This is an impromptu stage show for children, where they are the entertainment. They are selected from the audience and choose costumes they want to wear: cowboys and cowgirls, cows, horses and other Wild West characters.

Puyallup Spring Fair Choir & Ensemble Festival: This festival features some of the region’s most accomplished choral and ensemble groups including the Total Experience Gospel Choir with Tracie Davis as the very special Mistress of Ceremonies. Don’t miss this memorable event taking place at the Showplace Stage on Saturday, April 21, noon – 5 pm.

Ag Magic Show: Go back to the agricultural roots of the Puyallup Valley! Whether you’re a Kid or a parent, you can help make the magic happen AND test your own agricultural knowledge.

Red Hatters: Enjoy fun and activities just for Red Hatters. New this year is the Great Red Hat Houdini Caper. Can you make a bunny disappear? And back for the 4th year is the hat contest – with a “Down on the Farm” theme! Bring your decorated hat to the Garden Stage.

Day 223: 79th Annual Daffodil Festival / Parade

This Saturday, April 14th 2012 is the 79th Annual Daffodil Festival Grand Floral Street Parade.

The Grand Floral Street Parade is one of the highlights every year in Puyallup and other surrounding cities.

The parade travels through the four cities of Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting and consists of approximately 40 float entries and over 80 other entries, including bands, marching and mounted units.

The floats are decorated with fresh-cut Daffodils, numbering in the thousands.

  • Puyallup – 12:45 pm
  • Sumner – 2:30 pm
  • Orting – 5:00 pm

The Theme for the 2012 Parade is: “Don’t Stop Believing”

Day 222: Y Run For Kids

Get ready for the 26th Annual Y Run for Kids this Saturday, April 14th (Registration begins at 7:00 am).

100% of the proceeds go to the YMCA’s Teen Late Nite Program and Scholarship Fund. Late Nite provides free, safe and positive recreational and educational activities for all area youth every Friday and Saturday night.

The Course
The USATF certified 5k Course ID#WA07008MW begins and ends at Tollefson Plaza in Downtown Tacoma, 1500 block Pacific Ave. The course is a straight out and back with a gradual uphill at the start. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Puget Sound between Mile one and Mile two.

Results
Unofficial results will be posted near the finish line as soon as they are available. A complete listing of official results will be posted here on Monday following the race.

Awards
Awards will be presented to the following:

  • Top overall male and female for the 5k race
  • Top 3 finishers for both men and women in the following age groups: 12 and under, 13-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, and 80+.

T-shirts
All 5K registrants will receive a technical running shirt included. Additional shirts can be purchased separately at the following prices:

T-shirt and Packet Pick-Up
Registrants can pick up their t-shirt and packet on Friday, April 13 from 4-8pm at the Tacoma Center YMCA, 1144 Market Street, Tacoma, WA.

Day 221: Science Magic with Jeff Evans

Are you looking for a super-fun way to add some science to your Spring Break?

Then come join Jeff Evans as he introduces some Science Magic at the Puyallup Public Library this Wednesday (April 5th) from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm.

Magic tricks can be explained by science, and popular magician Jeff Evans has been fascinated with science experiments and demonstrations since he was a kid growing up. The idea of bringing science and magic together was a natural fit. His goal is to spread this amazement and desire to learn science on to children of all ages.

Learn about the characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases. See amazing demonstrations on the properties of air pressure, static electricity, center of mass, density, and basic electronics. This is an interactive program where kids from the audience can help with certain experiments.

This FREE science program at the library is generously provided by the Kiwanis Club of Puyallup. Recommended for children 5 years and older. No registration required!

Day 220: No Sun Fun Run, Puyallup, WA

We live in Washington…we should be used to the rain by now, right?

Well, the No Sun Fun Run is a rain or shine event! Taking place this Saturday, January 28th… Check-in and day of event (registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Heritage Recreation Center in South Hill Puyallup).

The run is non-competitive and welcomes all ages and abilities. Make sure to come dressed warm and bring your enthusiasm for one of the first 5K’s (and 1K’s) of the year. Remember, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes!

1 Mile Course:
Starting at Heritage Recreation Center, the course will run two times around the outside of the ball fields and will finish inside the sports complex between fields 1 and 4.

5K Course:
Beautifully forested 5K course on the Nathan Chapman Memorial Trail are very flat and stroller friendly! Starting at Heritage Recreation Center, the course runs around the baseball fields then heads south and takes a large counter-clockwise loop around South Hill Park and forested wetlands. Then progresses back toward Heritage Recreation Center lower soccer fields, north along 94th Avenue, then west through the lower parking lot (next to Zeiger Elementary) and ends in between fields 2 and 3 inside the sports complex.

Day 219: 16th Annual Fantasy Lights, Spanaway, WA

Pierce County Parks and Recreation is pleased to present the 16th annual ‘Fantasy Lights at Spanaway Park’ the largest holiday drive-through display in the Northwest, featuring nearly 300 elaborate displays and thousands of sparkling lights. The beautiful two-mile drive along Spanaway Lake has become a memorable lakeside tradition for the entire family.

Visitors of all ages will be treated to the magical world of animation and imagination where bears fly kites, snowboys kick field goals, Santa snowboards down a slope, frogs jump in and out of a tree, and reindeer leap over your car. You will also marvel at several new attractions this year including the gingerbread playground, space aliens, and the holiday light tunnel.

As you drive, dial your car radio to FM 93.7 to listen to a selection of special holiday music performed by a local high school to add to the festive atmosphere of the park.

  • Fantasy Lights will operate every night including Christmas and New Year’s Eve, from 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm.

Day 218: Victorian Country Christmas, Puyallup, WA

Don’t miss the 24th annual Victorian Country Christmas Festival taking place Wednesday November 30th thru Sunday December 4th at the Puyallup Fair and Events Center!

What a great way to kick off the holidays and celebrate this wonderful time of year. Step back in time to the Victorian Village with old-fashioned streets and over 500 Victorian Stores! To keep authentic, each store is hosted by shopkeepers in Victorian attire.

There will also be lots of entertainment at the Victorian Country Christmas. Day 217: Santa Parade and Christmas Tree Lighting, Puyallup, WA

Don’t miss this years annual Santa Parade, Tree Lighting and Christmas Reception located in Downtown Puyallup at Pioneer Park and Pavilion.

This annual tradition kicks off the Christmas season this Saturday (12/3) starting at 5:00p

Bring the kids down to welcome Santa! See the jolly old elf arrive on one of Puyallup’s finest fire engines.

Afterwards visit the Pioneer Park Pavilion for ice skating at Holiday on Ice and watch as the City lights the Community Tree in Pioneer Park! This wonderful community tradition is a great way to kick off the holiday season!.
