Day 226: FREE Comic Book Day, Puyallup, WA

This Saturday (May 5th) is Free Comic Book Day!

This is the only day when comic book stores and libraries around the world give away comics to people of all ages.

At the Puyallup Public Library they will be giving out comic books at the front of the library from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

This is a great opportunity to bring your kids downtown and have them pick out some old classics or some fun new comics.

Or, just treat yourself to an issue of Spider-man, Star Wars, Owly, or Sonic the Hedgehog, just to name a few.

Day 223: 79th Annual Daffodil Festival / Parade

This Saturday, April 14th 2012 is the 79th Annual Daffodil Festival Grand Floral Street Parade.

The Grand Floral Street Parade is one of the highlights every year in Puyallup and other surrounding cities.

The parade travels through the four cities of Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting and consists of approximately 40 float entries and over 80 other entries, including bands, marching and mounted units.

The floats are decorated with fresh-cut Daffodils, numbering in the thousands.

Parade Start Times:

  • Tacoma – 10:15 am
  • Puyallup – 12:45 pm
  • Sumner – 2:30 pm
  • Orting – 5:00 pm

The Theme for the 2012 Parade is: “Don’t Stop Believing”

Day 222: Y Run For Kids

Get ready for the 26th Annual Y Run for Kids this Saturday, April 14th (Registration begins at 7:00 am).

100% of the proceeds go to the YMCA’s Teen Late Nite Program and Scholarship Fund. Late Nite provides free, safe and positive recreational and educational activities for all area youth every Friday and Saturday night.

Registration Fees

  • $25 Before February 29, 2012 (Fees change at 10pm)
  • $30 March 1 through April 13, 2012 (Online closes at 12pm)
  • $35 Day of Race
  • Kids 1K and Diaper Dash are free.

In Person on the day of race: $35 cash, check, or credit card. Day of race registration closes at 8:15am. Please allow ample time to park and walk to the Pacific Ave.

The Course
The USATF certified 5k Course ID#WA07008MW begins and ends at Tollefson Plaza in Downtown Tacoma, 1500 block Pacific Ave. The course is a straight out and back with a gradual uphill at the start. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Puget Sound between Mile one and Mile two.

Results
Unofficial results will be posted near the finish line as soon as they are available. A complete listing of official results will be posted here on Monday following the race.

Awards
Awards will be presented to the following:

  • Top overall male and female for the 5k race
  • Top 3 finishers for both men and women in the following age groups: 12 and under, 13-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, and 80+.

T-shirts
All 5K registrants will receive a technical running shirt included. Additional shirts can be purchased separately at the following prices:
Tech shirt: $25 (adult sizes only)

T-shirt and Packet Pick-Up
Registrants can pick up their t-shirt and packet on Friday, April 13 from 4-8pm at the Tacoma Center YMCA, 1144 Market Street, Tacoma, WA.

Day 216: Fantasy Lights Walk, Pierce County, WA

Kick off your holiday season with the Fantasy Lights WALK Sneak Preview this Sunday (20th) from 5:00p – 7:00p at Spanaway Park.

Details:

Fantasy Lights Walk takes you through 2.5 miles of animated displays at Spanaway Park. Walkers of all ages and abilities (including wheelchairs and strollers) are invited to take a sneak preview walk through Fantasy Lights this one night only.

Remember Sunday, November 20, 2011 is your only chance to walk through Fantasy Lights.

Cost:

  • $4 per person
  • $12 per family of four
  • Children ages 3 and under are free.

Check in:

Start and finish the 2.5 miles at Sprinker Recreation Center. Walkers may start any time between 5:00-7:00 p.m. after checking in.

Walkers should park and meet in Sprinker’s parking lot, located at 14824 South ‘C’ Street in Spanaway, then proceed as directed into Spanaway Park.

Walk Policies:

  • Walk only with strollers, wagons or wheelchairs.
  • No scooters, in-line skates, skateboards, or bikes.
  • Please NO dogs, except service dogs. Please have service dogs clearly marked to prevent confusion by other walkers and volunteer staff.
  • Bring a flashlight and wear visible clothing.
  • The event goes on rain or shine. Dress for the weather. No refunds due to inclement weather.
  • Bring your camera for a memorable holiday picture.
  • No vendors are allowed without written approval from the Pierce County Parks and Recreation Department.

Day 201: Pierce County Movie In the Park, Tacoma, WA

Here is another great movie in the park happening tonight at Sprinker Recreation Center (Tacoma).

Grab a blanket and your favorite lawn chair for a movie under the stars. You can view the movie on their HUGE jumbo screen!

Admission is FREE and the movies will start at dusk (shortly after 9 p.m.).

Karate Kid (2010) – Work causes a single mother to move to China with her young son; in his new home, the boy embraces kung fu, taught to him by a master.

Day 192: Pierce County’s `Minute to Win It` Games, Tacoma, WA

Participate in Pierce County’s version of the popular television game show ‘Minute to Win It’ this Friday (07/29) from 6:00p – 8:00p at Sprinker Recreation Center.

Pierce County Parks and Recreation will have it’s own spin on your favorite games.

For all ages
Fee:

  • $7/person
  • $25/family of 4

For those who have not seen the show, each game lasts 1 minute. Games include puzzles, buildings, and silly challenges.

The event is for children and families of all abilities. Come ready to play in comfortable clothes to test your skills against other kids and families!

Day 182: Junk In Trunk Sale, Tacoma, WA

This is a new twist on the old garage sale. Load up your trunk and sell your ‘stuff’ from the back of your vehicle.

You bring the ‘junk’ and they will bring the people! Just drive up and sell on Saturday July 9, July 30, and August 20 at Sprinker Recreation Center.

Cost?

Buyers: FREE ADMISSION!!

Sellers: Spots for sellers are limited to the number of parking spaces available. Reserve your spot now. Vendor fee is:

$15 per car/truck/van
$25 per RV/Camper

Junk In Trunk Vendors will be assigned one slot to park and one to set up sales.

  • July 9 Sale – Registration deadline is June 30th (TODAY!)
  • July 30 Sale – Registration deadline is July 22
  • August 20 Sale – Registration deadline is August 12
