Day 117: Banned Books Week Read Out, Puyallup, WA

Banned Books Week (September 25 – October 2) celebrates the freedom to choose and express your opinion. The Puyallup Public Library will be hosting a Read Out on Thursday, September 30, 6:30 – 7:30pm.

Their looking for a few good readers to help them celebrate by reading selections aloud from various banned and challenged books. If you’d like to participate, please contact Bonnie Svitavsky, Young Adult Librarian, at 253.841.5454 or bsvitavsky@ci.puyallup.wa.us. All ages are welcome to come and listen! Refreshments will be provided.

Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

Intellectual freedom—the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered unorthodox or unpopular—provides the foundation for Banned Books Week. BBW stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them. Day 116: Puyallup Fair – Day 8, Puyallup, WA

2k10 YouthFest – Sunday, Sept. 26

Come enjoy this youth music, art and entertainment festival this Sunday, September 26th. You’ll find activities happening throughout the Puyallup Fair all day long!

Mathias Anderle

Don’t miss this debut concert by native Puyallup boy, Mathias Anderle on the Coca-Cola stage, Sun, Sept. 26 at 7 pm. Mathias is now hard at work writing and recording for his debut album release in 2010. His first single, “Shine On,” is a featured track on KIDZ BOP 17. Mathias also starred in the Nickelodeon movie, “School Gyrls” along with Justin Bieber. Mathias co-writes most of his own songs and his influences are varied, “I like to mix together Jazz, R&B, Pop, Rock and Reggae to create my own unique sound.”

Roman Holiday

Don’t miss this alternative rock band that’s taking the Seattle music scene by storm! They blend driving rock music, captivating melodies and emotion-driven vocals to create a powerful, unique sound. They recently their highly anticipated debut full length album “Paint This Town”. Catch their show on the Coca-Cola Stage Sun, Sept. 26 at 7:45 pm during YouthFest. This American Idol, Season 6 Finalist became a pop culture icon as a teenager. However, the twenty year old Northwest native has grown up since his Idol days. Aside from appearances on the hit NBC reality show, “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” Sanjaya performs with the Total Experience Gospel Choir in Seattle and his first solo album, “Life, Love, Music” featuring the single “4a.m.” is set to release soon.

John Robert Powers

Day 115: Puyallup Fair – Day 7, Puyallup, WA

Fair Exhibits

The Puyallup Fair exhibits bring the talents of individuals from all over Washington state and beyond. Individuals enter their handiwork in a variety of different categories for the chance to stand out above all the rest.

World Class Art Exhibit

This year’s special art exhibit features the work of Leo E. Osborne. Born in Marshfield, MA in 1947, Osborne spent his youth climbing trees, flying kites and walking along stonewalls where in summer the tiger lilies grew well over his head. It was in those forest settings that he first felt the world of spirit…the old souls that were present in those sacred places. Thus began Leo’s fascination with the “wild” side of life and the world of nature and spirit. In 2002, Osborne moved into a new location on Guemes Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington state. Captivated by the love and joyful spirit of this island, they have together co-created MILKWOOD STUDIO & HOME GALLERY. Enjoy the varied works of this fascinating artist, on display daily.

Photo Salon

This exhibition has been part of the Fair for 70 years. It is one of the top photo exhibitions held in the Pacific Northwest, and is approved by the Photographic Society of America (PSA.) This esteemed society will present 11 PSA Medals and twelve citations may be given for outstanding prints and digital images in each section. Four special Fair medals along with other special awards and ribbons will be presented. Located on the second floor of the Pavilion, view the winning graphics and enjoy the works of some of the world’s best photographers. Slide shows are scheduled daily.

Home Arts

Browse examples of domestic arts including baking, preserved foods, sewing, quilting, knitting and much more. You’ll also enjoy cooking demonstrations taught by area restauranteurs and chefs. Learn new techniques and great ideas!

Hobby Hall

Visit Hobby Hall for an amazing look at the intriguing world of crafts and collections. Three demonstration stages also showcase diverse talents such as wood carving, calligraphy, ceramics, egg artistry and more! You can also see the contest winners on display.

Fine Arts

Let your eyes do the walking around this extraordinary exhibit of fine art. See original works, many submitted by local artists. Categories include water media, oils, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, and computer art. This year’s feature exhibit is a special competition for pastel artists. Daily demonstrations are also scheduled featuring each medium.

Fred Oldfield Western Heritage Center

Visit this amazing museum, just inside the Red Gate. You’ll see authentic artifacts within old west dioramas, an extensive gallery of Fred Oldfield original artwork, a magnificent Native American basket collection, and a gift shop of memorabilia and artwork by local artists. The center also offers many ongoing art classes for youth, as well as specialty classes for adults throughout the year.

Jr/Sr High School Art Show

Enjoy the works of Washington’s growing artists. This exhibit features of 1,000 pieces of flat artwork from western Washington schools, and encourages students to develop confience and creativity. Volunteers from Puyallup Valley Arts United serve as docents as part of their continued effort to promote art in Puyallup and surrounding areas. A panel of professional local art educators judge the entries.


Your senses will tingle with the scents and colors that abound in the Floral Building. Browse through rows and rows of prize winning flowers of many varieties including roses, geraniums, chrysanthemums, bonsai and so many more. Daily demonstrations also provide insight in how to cultivate flowers as well as creative ideas and floral projects.

Education Building

The Puyallup Fair is committed to the education and enrichment of today’s youth. This building hosts a variety of educational organizations and assocations. A stage features exhibitions by local students, school clubs and academic organizations.


The Washington State 4-H Fair program contributes to life skill development by teaching young people sportsmanship, cooperation,leadership, team work, responsibility, knowledge development, respect for self and others, and communication skills. 4-H members also have a lot of fun while they learn. The Puyallup Fair is host to the 4-H State Finals every year.

Cosmo and Wanda, the cooky and quirky fairy godparents, will be brining a little magic to ToonzVille, Sept. 13-15. Character hours are 11 am – 8 pm.

Meet Patrick Star

He’s SpongeBob’s best starfish buddy and he’s coming to meet you September 16-17 in ToonzVille! Character hours are 11 am – 8 pm.

Meet Dora the Explorer

Come explore ToonzVille September 18-20 and meet Dora! Get your picture taken with your favorite adventurer and her friend Boots. Character hours are 11 am – 8 pm.

Meet Diego

Meet Dora the Explorer’s cousin, Diego Marquez, an 8-year-old action-adventure hero who loves nature and animals. Diego and his trusty rescue pack will be in ToonzVille September 21-23. Character hours are 11 am – 8 pm.

Meet the Backyardigans

Pablo and Uniqua are going on an adventure from their backyard to yours in ToonzVille, Sept. 24-26. And you can bet they’ll be singning all the way! Character hours are 11 am – 8 pm.

Day 113: Puyallup Fair – Day 5, Puyallup, WA


The Puyallup Fair is a great place to go for those animals lovers out there. There is a wide variety of animals to see (even some exotic ones, see below).

Draft Horse & Driving Demonstrations

Enjoy these magnificent animals in daily demonstrations in Paulhamus Arena or visit them in their barn just outside the Arena.

Fair Farm

Visit our friendly farm critters with so many irresistible animals including bunnies, llamas, goats, roosters and more!

Animals of the World

Discover exotic animals from all corners of the world including alpacas, Nigerian dwarf goats, yaks, wallabies and more! The exhibit takes place the last five days of the Fair, Sept. 22-26.

Piglet Palace

Enjoy some quality time with the newest Fair animals. The palace features a litter of piglets born a few days before the Fair, and hopefully another litter born during the Fair. These adorable babies are a don’t miss! Located between the livestock and dairy barns.

Day 112: Puyallup Fair – Day 4, Puyallup, WA

Fair Food

Cooking Oil at the Fair is Trans Fat Free

Whether you’re eating French fries or elephant ears, you’ll find that Fair Food to be a little healthier. Fair food vendors now use trans fat free cooking oils. This applies to items that are cooked in oil, not baked. This issue deals with the cooking oils only, and not pre-made products, such as hamburger buns, batters, and pre-prepared box mixes. According to government regulations, serving portions may have no more than .5 mg of trans fat free oil to be considered trans fat free.

Relax and enjoy Washington wines, microbrews and northwest cuisine. Wine educators will be on hand speaking to the art of wine making in Washington.

Corona Cantina

The Cantina, located near the South Skyride terminal, is operated by Lady Luck’s Cowgirl Up Steakhouse & Saloon and features Budweiser, Modelo, and Corona products. Yummy food service is provide by Howard’s Hitching Post. Big screen TV’s play the game of the day!

Restaurant Building

Sit down, relax and enjoy yummy Fair Food. This building is devoted to food with tons of indoor seating. Restaurants include Marlowe’s, Fred E’s, Aronica Stir-Fry, Myer’s Burgers, Kay’s Kitchen, Louies, Aronica Pizza, GiGi’s, Duris Concessions and Fair Scones.

Americraft ShowPlex Food Court

Take a break from shopping and grab a meal or a snack here. The food court is easy to access with indside and outside service windows and lots of indoor seating space. Restaurants include: Two Fer One, Cascade Burgers, GiGi’s, Spud Fish & Chips, and Young Life BBQ.

SillyVille Food Court

Kids will cheer, yummy kids food is here! The SillyVille food court features kids value menu items, with portion sizes just for them! Restaurants include: Whistle Stop Pizza, Ice Cream On A Stick, Fair Scones & Slushies, Fun Foods – Sno Cones and peanut butter & jelly sandwiches.
